Managing PPWR, compliance and packaging information<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) represents a significant and evolving challenge for the industry. Nil\u00f6rn is working to ensure that the required data can be provided in a structured and reliable manner.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

From August 2026, PPWR-related information will be available through our Web Order System. This will be the primary channel for accessing the data we provide and will be continuously expanded as additional information becomes available.<\/span><\/p>\n

During this development phase, the focus remains on enabling consistent data delivery for all products. As a result, the ability to support customer-specific formats or individual data requests will be limited. It is important to clarify that data is provided directly to customers, but not to vendors or other third parties.<\/span><\/p>\n

As PPWR requirements come into effect, Nil\u00f6rn recommends a pragmatic and sustainable approach to managing existing packaging stock. Packaging that has already been placed on the EU market before the regulation applies on 12 August 2026 can continue to be used without the need to retrospectively add the required responsible economic operator information or a unique identifier. <\/span><\/p>\n

For stock held after this date, where economic operator details and\/or a unique identifier may be missing, Nil\u00f6rn advises prioritising natural phase-out and avoiding unnecessary rework, particularly for short-term volumes. Where relevant, digital solutions such as QR codes may be considered to complement this information, supporting both compliance efforts and waste reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n

For all new product developments, and new production runs of existing products, it is important that artworks include the required responsible economic operator information and a unique identifier from the outset.<\/span><\/p>\n

Available information will continue to be updated and expanded on an ongoing basis. The latest updates will be communicated through regular customer communication channels.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Empowering Consumers Directive (EmpCo), applicable from\u00a0September 2026, introduces stricter requirements for environmental claims and certification labels used on products and packaging.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Environmental claims must be:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • clear and transparent<\/li>\n
  • properly substantiated<\/li>\n
  • not misleading to consumers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Certification labels and schemes must:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • be based on robust and verifiable systems<\/li>\n
    • avoid self-created or unclear certification schemes<\/li>\n
    • provide greater transparency around environmental performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In addition, there will be increased scrutiny of environmental claims communicated through:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • logos<\/li>\n
      • symbols<\/li>\n
      • visual messaging on garments and packaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Recent industry developments<\/strong><\/p>\n

        To align with these upcoming requirements:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • FSC\u00ae<\/strong>\u00a0has updated its labelling approach and communication around certified materials<\/li>\n
        • bluesign\u00ae<\/strong>\u00a0is transitioning from its current label system to the new\u00a0bluepass system<\/strong>, designed to:\n
            \n
          • improve transparency<\/li>\n
          • strengthen substantiation of environmental claims<\/li>\n
          • align with the ECGT Directive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            What this means for you<\/strong><\/p>\n

            As these changes come into force:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • existing labels and communication may need to be reviewed and adapted<\/li>\n
            • certification logos can still be used, but only within clearly defined frameworks<\/li>\n
            • the context in which claims are presented will become increasingly important<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
