Connecting labels with data and digital experiences
In this edition of our series Inside the specialist departments, we speak with Martin Arvidsson, Business Area Manager for Retail Information Service (RIS), about how Nilörn connects physical labels with digital data — creating new ways for brands and consumers to interact.
Martin shares insights from his 25-year journey at Nilörn, where he’s seen RIS grow from a one-person technical role to a core part of our digital offer. Today, his team leads the way in developing Nilörn:CONNECT™, integrating AI, and exploring the future of digital product labelling – from compliance and transparency to interactive consumer experiences.
“Digital labelling is very exciting – I’m sure we’ve just seen the beginning of this journey. It’s not only about fulfilling current or upcoming regulations, but also for brands unlocking a channel for long-term communication and value-added services for consumers and other stakeholders.” – Martin, Business Area Manager, RIS.
Preparing for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)
From 30 December 2025, the EU’s new Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will take effect. The regulation aims to prevent products linked to deforestation from entering or circulating within the EU market. At Nilorn, we see this as an opportunity to further strengthen our commitment to responsible sourcing across the entire supply chain.
The EUDR is a new EU framework designed to stop commodities associated with deforestation from being traded within the EU. It covers materials such as wood, rubber, soy, coffee, and paper, and requires companies to prove that their products are deforestation-free, legally sourced, and fully traceable – down to precise geolocation coordinates and production dates.
Nilörn already operates a robust due diligence system that includes quality management, access to information, risk assessment, and mitigation. We are now expanding this system to meet the stricter EUDR requirements by:
-
Collecting geolocation data and satellite imagery to verify deforestation-free sourcing.
-
Updating routines and tools in collaboration with suppliers and partners.
-
Prioritising FSC™ certified and FSC™ recycled paper (outside the scope of the regulation), which helps mitigate compliance risks.
-
Providing internal training and supplier communication to ensure readiness across all locations.
Nilörn holds FSC™ certification at all sourcing and production sites and remains committed to transparency and responsible sourcing throughout our operations.
Compliance with EUDR begins on 30 December 2025 for large companies, with a proposed grace period for enforcement until June 2026.
